We offer comprehensive Wellness Evaluations for males and females that consist of a comprehensive medical history and physical exam. We can also evaluate your current supplements and offer nutritional guidance.

We specialize in menopause and perimenopause care, and PMS, including the use of bio-identical hormone therapy when appropriate.

Menopause is a change which occurs in mid-life with the cessation of menstruation. The average time of this transition is between 48 and 52 years of age, although for many women this may occur earlier or later. However it is not a sudden change for most, with subtle changes beginning years earlier, for some women beginning in their 30’s.  It is a natural and normal process, not a disease. Unpleasant symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and irritation, mood swings and depression, difficulty concentrating, and mild short-term memory problems often, but not always, accompany it. A given peri-menopausal woman may have all, some, or none of these symptoms.

Hormone therapy became popular in the early 1970’s for the alleviation of menopausal symptoms. At that time, Premarin (made from pregnant mare’s urine) was the only estrogen available. Women are often conflicted regarding whether to start or continue this therapy because of side effects and risks of the treatment itself. The different types of hormonal therapy available cause further confusion: pills, creams, patches, suppositories, “natural” vs. synthetic hormones. With the interest in alternative medicine has arisen an interest in non-pharmaceutical solutions, such as vitamin and nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, energy medicine and Mind-Body interventions.

In our practice, when hormone therapy is recommended we use “bio-identical” hormones. These consist of the hormones that your body made in abundance prior to menopause and thrived on. They are familiar to your body, and your body has well-established mechanisms to metabolize them efficiently. There are compounded forms of bio-identical hormones (available through a compounding pharmacy) and also some are now available commercially. The decisions that one makes regarding what, if any, type of treatments to use must be based on individual symptoms, health, and family history. What is right for one person may not be right for another. Sometimes, lifestyle changes are all that is needed. Any “one size fits all” philosophy in this area will clearly fail. Our goal is to work with you to develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
